My Journey
Mindfulness is simply a tool for unlocking human potential; the potential to be your best self, your potential for personal growth. Collectively this potential is what drives positive economic, social and cultural change. It inexorably drives the human project ever-forward."Rob Hutchison, Founder, Mindfulness Changes Everything
I’ve always been interested in the brain. It’s one of the reasons I took a psych degree and focused on neuropsychology. How the brain works fascinates me.
But it wasn’t until I experienced an episode of depression that I took interest in what my brain was going through and what it was doing to me.
Under the auspices of medical orthodoxy as it relates to mental health I was placed on the usual regimen of anti-depressants, in my case Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs). These pills may have contributed to the abatement of negative thoughts but they also had a severely debilitating effect on how I was feeling, my personality and my relationships.
In a sense I ought to be thankful for being on them as they spurred my resolve to find an alternative, a better, way to deal with what I was going through. And that led me to mindfulness.
Mindfulness Changes the Brain
Just to clarify, before I go on, I don’t for one moment argue that mindfulness is the panacea for all mental health conditions, nor do I dismiss the notion that pharmaceutical intervention along with things like CBT can have positive effects on a mind that is traumatized to the extent of being maladaptive.
However, I am, through the research I have conducted, convinced that mindfulness practices contribute to a state of emotional well-being and overall physical and mental health, in both a preventative and remedial sense. Mindfulness changes the brain, and that changes everything.
More than that though, I am convinced that mindfulness allows us to intervene in the way the brain works to effect more positive outcomes for how we feel, think and act. In other words mindfulness is not simply about mitigating against traumatic experiences or righting an emotionally chaotic ship.
Rather, applied mindfulness develops, hones and accentuates capabilities and ability to use our brain in a more effective manner.
Applied Mindfulness Drives Human Potential
We can, for instance deploy mindfulness to improve how we learn - increasing our capacity for taking in new knowledge and applying it in new situations - the very definition of human progress.
Imagine the application of this in business.
Corporations spend billions every year on training and there’s a great deal of suspicion and evidence that much of this is wasted or at least not as effective as it could be. Applied mindfulness allows us to help employees develop their learning styles so that new knowledge ‘sticks’ and can be reapplied, effectively increasing the ROI of corporate training budgets.
Applied mindfulness has also been shown to be effective in developing what are called soft skills - those core human competencies such as emotional intelligence, communication, collaboration, team work, problem solving, empathy, resilience and adaptability, and creativity.
These are the sorts of skills that make for a productive, engaged and happier workforce, and for a more competitive business.
Finally, applied mindfulness can be directly deployed against one of the key drivers of worker disengagement and burnout - stress. Stress, especially in the workplace (either in the office or at home), has an outsized effect not only on the functioning of employees but on the corporate bottom line as the cost to companies of stressed-induced sick leave and staff turnover undercuts corporate competitiveness and profit.
Applied Mindfulness For The Workplace
Coming from the corporate world I have an intimate first-hand experience and understanding of these issues - I have been part of the wasted training budgets and I have seen colleagues exhausted and burnt out from the stress of unrelenting demands to perform and deliver.
I also know that through applied mindfulness I can help them regain a sure-footing in their work and personal lives, empowering them to be in control of how they act and respond, of how they feel and think, of how they perform, of how they not only endure but bounce back in times of stress. And through them, I know I’m able to help businesses be more competitive and profitable, attracting and retaining high performing and happier talent.
Mindfulness Changes Everything focuses on three core human experiences in the workplace. Each program is created to develop the human potential of program participants in each area:
Applied Mindfulness Resilience Training
How to deal with, flourish in, and bounce back from acute and chronic stress.
Applied Mindfulness Soft Skills Training
How to develop the core competencies to perform more effectively in the workplace.
Applied Mindfulness Learning Development Training
How to develop individual learning styles to increase your ability to learn and apply new knowledge.

Lisa Ramsey, MDThe content and delivery were clear. In particular, introducing Mindfulness training through a scientific approach was particularly refreshing and allowed those in the programme to ease into and pick up the concepts and approach.
